Urban Cake Lady

So many questions when you’re a street art lover! In fact, you never know who the artist might be behind the anonymity, and trust me – they’re never who or what you think they’ll be!
They say if you haven’t seen Urban Cake Lady work around the streets, then you probably don’t live, or haven’t been to Melbourne – or, you don’t pay attention to all the blogs and websites that track down her work when it goes up. Urban Cake Lady has been quite prolific in recent times, and her work always has a tranquil, at ease, naturalistic feel to it. This is the kind of street art that makes you stop walking, and take a few moments in appreciation of its presence.
She moved to Melbourne from New Zealand. "The plan, like a lot of kiwis have, was to save for about six months and then go travelling. Well – that didn’t work out, and after a year or so I felt like I hadn’t done anything really creative, and I really missed it. I’m not really sure where the idea of doing street art came from, exactly, probably just from living and breathing in the Melbourne culture", she said in the interview.
One of her characters is now instantly recognisable – zebra tights, red hoodie, head down, crossed legs.
The City of Melbourne recognises the importance of street art in contributing to a vibrant urban culture. Melbourne’s street art is internationally renowned and has become an attraction for local and overseas visitors experiencing Melbourne’s creative ambience.
The conducted research and community consultation revealed that most people do not like graffiti 'tagging' (a person writing their graffiti name or 'tag' on a wall with marker or paint). However, many people appreciate 'street art' such as larger, more artistic pieces, or murals placed in appropriate locations with the required permission.
